Too funny....my aunt (god that makes you sound old) had quite the dilemna this weekend. And I felt, as did she, this was the perfect place to share. When your at a bar and someone buys you a drink, are you OBLIGATED for anything? I mean, you didn't ask for the drink, you didn't even smile at the guy, so are you obligated to repay it in any way, better yet, do you even take it?! Me, personally, I think you didn't ask for it, your not obligated to do anything, and you MINE AS WELL take it because its not something you can "return" it would just be WASTED. Once they have served it, they wouldn't be able to serve it again. But the real reason I wanted to bring it up is because this dilemna which isn't such a horrible one, can really put stress on a person.
Here is the thought process that went through my aunts head: DO I DRINK IT? DO I LET IT SIT THERE? WHAT WILL HE THINK IF I DRINK IT? WHAT WILL HE THINK IF I LET IT SIT THERE? DO I JUST LET HIM WASTE HIS MONEY ON IT SINCE IT WONT GET HIM ANYWHERE WITH ME ANYWAY............... DO I SAY NO THANKS? WHAT KIND OF SIGNAL AM I SENDING????????????????????????? TOO MANY DECISIONS. WHATS THE RULE ON IT? THERESA AND I DECIDED THAT IF HE DIDNT ASK US FIRST AND JUST WENT AHEAD AND BOUGHT THEM THEN ITS HIS FAULT THAT HE SPENT HIS MONEY FOR NO REASON...............BUT THEN MAYBE HE WAS JUST DOING A NICE DEED AND THEN WE NEED TO PAY IT FORWARD......HMMMM, SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Oh the decisions we must make on a daily basis, they really can get to be just TOO much!

If someone buys you a drink that you do not know you will first want to consider if that drink came directly from a bartender or if he brought the drink to you.
If he brought the drink to you either a) let it sit there or b) take it to the bathroom with you and dump it out. If it came from the bartender a)making eye contact with the person, waving, giving a smile and saying thank you is appropriate b) you can go ahead and drink it c) you can say that you aren't having any more d) say that you were going to switch to a different drink and anyone else can have it or e) it can sit there. I would just smile and say thanks, maybe wave at em and drink the drink and go back to what I was doing with who ever I was with.
More than likely they were doing it to be nice or to take the first step, but that doesn't mean that they have the right to expect anything to happen. It was a gesture.
If you are feeling polite and kind as well you can return the favor by telling the bartender you appreciated him buying you a drink, it wasn't necesary and you would like to return the favor. Or simply telling the guy that exact thing, thanks for the drink, it wasn't necesary let me get your next drink.
It's a way of showing kindness. It is a way of taking a step in a direction but it can also be a friendly bar manner.
Maybe he thought your aunt was cute and wanted to get her a drink. Maybe he had plenty of drinks himself and felt the need to spend a little more money and saw that her drink was low.
But no matter what you do there isn't a wrong way to handle it except for causing a huge scene or throwing the drink in his face. :)
LIFE IS TO SHORT....
SHUT UP AND DRINK.....
